I can’t remember another first week in the NFL where so many powerhouses in a single conference were absolutely throttled.

Now, I don’t mean throttled in the sense that they all lost their respective games, I mean throttled in the sense that every single one of the teams highlighted below brought up some questions about their reliability as online football betting powerhouses.

First, let me share some good news. Just because the seemingly invincible three teams I highlight below have caused online betting fans a moment to pause and ponder their true chances of providing online profits, it doesn’t mean that the AFC is a dead conference. On the contrary, the more the merrier, I say.

With the rest of the AFC suddenly catching up to these three teams, online value plays should be easier to find for the astute NFL online betting fan.

Okay, here’s what’s going on with the AFC Big Three - -

New England Patriots - - By now every NFL betting fan on this planet should know that Tom Brady isn’t going to suit it up for the Pats any more this season. The Pats have now placed their future into the hands of Matt Cassel. Cassel is no Tom Brady. But if there is a situation where Cassel could excel it’s this one. Can any BetUS online sportsbook fan think of two guys better suited to help out a young journeyman quarterback than Randy Moss and Wes Welker?

Moss made Daunte Culpepper look like a hall of famer. After Randy left Minnesota, Culpepper ended up looking like Cliff Stoudt taking over for Terry Bradshaw. So the Patriots run the ball more. They can still fling it out to Randy Moss and let him create in space. Also, the fade route to Moss is still going to be open all day. I think the Patriots keep winning games. They won’t dominate, but they will win.

What’s even better for football betting fans is the fact that the Patriots will now all of a sudden go off as underdogs in games where they would have been favorites. Case in point, this weekend’s match-up versus the New York Jets. The Pats are + 2 ½ against the spread.

San Diego Chargers - - Shawne Merriman got smart and decided to take the year off. I thought it was idiotic to try and play on a bum knee. This is football. It ain’t golf. And Shawne ain’t Tiger Woods. Sorry. In any case without Shawne Merriman this team will struggle on defense. Their defensive backs are overrated, their linebackers, sans Merriman, are okay, not great, and their coaching sucks.

I also do not have faith in Philip Rivers. I didn’t like this team going into the season. So why would I like them now after they pretty much gave up against the Carolina Panthers this past Sunday? Teams on the verge of making it to the Super Bowl do not lose their openers at home against a team like the Panthers. The Chargers will still get the benefit of the doubt by online odds makers.

But I do feel bad for those folks who put some online betting dollars on these guys to win the Super Bowl. They’re just not good enough. LT will start to slow down and the Chargers have nobody that can pick up the slack.

Indianapolis Colts - - What a lackluster performance, but I do believe that a lot of how they performed in losing to the Chicago Bears on Sunday night had to do with Peyton Manning’s injury and the fact that the Bears’ defense was healthy from top to bottom. Also, the Bears’ D always plays well early in the NFL season. They end up wearing down later in the season. If this game had occurred in Week 10, the Colts probably would have thumped those guys. Still, the Colts looked horrible.

The worst part was watching Peyton and offensive coordinator Tom Moore argues after each play. What was that all about? In any case out of the Big Three the Colts are the most likely to bounce back and make their way to the Super Bowl.

But I don’t think they will. It’s better to look elsewhere.

If online wagering fans want to have a shot at winning a future wager on the Super Bowl, then they had better put an online bet one of these teams. These teams looked awfully impressive after the first week of the NFL Season.

Pittsburgh Steelers - - My pre-season Super Bowl pick didn’t disappoint. Wow. The Steel Curtain is back! That defense was ultra-impressive and the offense was incredible. The Steelers have some weapons on offense and I have a feeling that as the season wears on we’re going to see every single one of them. Willie Parker ran for three touchdowns in the ass whupping that Pitt put onto the Houston Texans this past Sunday.

That means that Rashard Mendenhall didn’t get a chance to show his stuff. Wait until he does. Same with rookie wide receiver Limas Sweed. This team is loaded in every single starting position. If they don’t suffer through any injuries and coach Mike Tomlin calls a better game in the playoffs than he did last season, I’ve got these guys winning the whole thing. Get your Super Bowl online bets down right now before these fellas drop to around + 350 to win the Bowl.

Denver Broncos - - Yes, they were playing the awful, terrible, absolutely ridiculous excuse for a team that is the Oakland Raiders. Did anybody notice that Al Davis is starting to look more and more like the NFL version of Gollum from Lord of the Rings?

I noticed that because I got tired of watching Eddie Royal, a rookie for the Broncos; destroy a fella like DeAngelo Hall. It was the way that the Broncos manhandled the Raiders on the offensive and defensive lines that impressed me.

This team was a machine out there on Monday night. They’re not going to be favored in their games versus the San Diego Chargers. Online football betting fans had better do their homework before deciding that the Broncos have no shot against the Chargers. In fact I’m inclined to believe that the Broncos could be a sneaky good money line key team the rest of the NFL season. Until, that is, they end up beating a team like San Diego by twenty points. Do not sleep on the Broncos, NFL betting fans, there is profit to be made on this team.

New York Jets - - I highlight them because they won a game on the road in the NFL without a kicker. I mean, that’s almost unheard of. Brett Favre looked good, the Jets got the running game going, and their defense should improve. Are they as good as Denver and Pittsburgh? They aren’t even close, but Favre is the X-Factor. He can bring home a Super Bowl for this team. More importantly, these guys will be nice overlays when they’re the underdogs in games.

Not this weekend when they play the Patriots, but when they are online wagering underdogs. This team is going to go through a few distressful moments this season, their defensive has to gel as a unit before they start blowing teams away, but the talent is there.
