In 2002, new head coach Tyrone Willingham led the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to a 10-2 record, and back into national prominence on the college football scene. The program may have been
relatively dormant for awhile. But the Irish were back! It didn’t matter that Notre Dame was fortunate to eke out a bunch of close wins thanks to turnover differential. It didn’t matter that they looked pretty helpless in a 28-6 Gator
Bowl loss to North Carolina State. Willingham was going to recruit stars to South Bend, and the Irish were going to be a perennial power for years to come. Didn’t work out that way. Notre Dame slumped to 5-7 the following season. A 6-6 record in 2004 was enough to send Willingham back to the Pac 10. As did his predecessor, Charlie Weis inspired a big season as the new head coach. He brought “NFL smarts” and a no-nonsense attitude to the program. The players responded as if they
had been craving discipline all along. Notre Dame went 9-3 in 2005, and reached the 10-victory plateau the following season. Clearly Weis was the savior the program was looking for, right? Maybe, maybe not. It might seem crazy to ask right now whether or not Weis is heading down the Willingham career path. It’s not so crazy when you take a closer look at last year’s
results.
