Today we will round out the top 5 preseason team previews with the #5 Florida Gators. Florida is coming off a season with mixed successes. They had the best player in college football, Tim Tebow. But Gators fans can’t be happy with getting embarrassed in the Capital One Bowl by Michigan. Last year they had one of the best offenses but only finished 9-4.
Offensively the Gators are coming off another great year for Urban Meyers. No player in college football has less to prove than junior Tim Tebow. The 6-foot-3, 232-pound left-hander performed every task imaginable from a quarterback on his way to earning the nation's most coveted award the Heisman Trophy. Tebow was a point’s machine in 2007. He threw 32 touchdown passes, striking from anywhere and everywhere, and he scored 23 touchdowns himself while serving as Florida's chief goal-line runner. No other player in NCAA history ever recorded 20 touchdowns each passing and rushing. He had a hand in more than 77 percent of the Gators' 71 offensive touchdowns. This season they hope to have Tebow do less and rest of his weapons to do more. Junior Percy Harvin is versatile HB he can run it or split out and act as a WR. Don’t look for him to have great #’s at RB but all purpose yards might be one of the best in the country. The WR position for the Gators is stocked with speedy highly touted recruits. They give up a little experience here but more than make up for it in quantity of highly gifted athletes. The offensive line is the rock of the team. They are all back from last year. Health is the only concern as several of them were banged up in spring practice. The offense as a whole should once again carry this team to the upper echelon of the SEC.
The Gator defense is coming off what could be called a poor season. Last seen being carved up the Michigan Wolverines many fans will be holding there breath each time this group enters the game. The defensive line which really was a problem last year will have a whole new look this year. They are going to rotate probably 8-9 guys in and out to stay fresh and hopefully put more pressure on the offense late in games. At LB junior Brandon Spikes is without a question the best player returning. He looks this year to become more of a leader and help his other teammates start performing. The group around him isn't too bad, either. Junior Dustin Doe (6-0, 211) is undersized but fast and active on the weak side, posting 85 tackles -- five for loss -- last season. Likewise, strong-side linebacker A.J. Jones (6-1, 213), a sophomore, can run and make plays. In the secondary there will be many changes. Last year could only be classified as one thing, disaster. Coaches hope the problem was inexperience because all the same people will be back this year. The coaches are going to try and be more aggressive up front with the line this year to help and cover for the secondary. Overall the defense is definitely the question mark of the team. Look for more of the same of what happened last year. They will not be able to hold up against the SEC elite teams.
The Gators have the potential to be explosive on offense, and with Tebow at the controls they are a dangerous opponent for any team. But the defense has too many freshmen and sophomores and too many unanswered questions, and the young Gators make too many mistakes, last season only six teams in the nation committed more penalties than Florida, to be an elite team. Look for this team to finish the year ranked around 10-15. They are probably the 4th best SEC team. This team is way over ranked in this first coach’s poll.
Tomorrow we will preview the #6 LSU Tigers!
