After checking out Sportsbook.com's "Betting Trends", a piece of information
jumps out that seems to go against the norm. For the first time in quite
some time, the betting public is backing a majority of the underdogs.
There are a couple very good reasons for why the public is backing the Dogs.
Since all of the wildcard teams were eliminated last week, we are now left with
the top eight teams in the NFL. This is kind of ironic when you consider
all of the parody the league had to offer this season. With the top seeds all in
the hunt, the public most likely views these teams as having a smaller degree of
difference between the Favorites and the Underdogs. Another reason the
public seems to prefer most of the Dogs this weekend might be due to the fact
that the Colts and Patriots are teams that the public sided with on a consistent
basis throughout the year. Also, the Colts and Patriots have both been
playoff mainstays in recent years, whereas the Ravens are making their first
appearance in three years and the Chargers are making their second appearance in
eleven years. Almost 60% of the early money is on the Colts as they visit the favored
Ravens (-3.5). Even though the Ravens are 10-6 ATS this season, they have
not gotten as much respect from the bettors as the Colts have this season,
despite only covering three of their last nine games. During this skid, in
which the Colts lost three games SU as Favorites, the betting public continued
to pound the Colts on a weekly basis. Even more concerning for Colts
backers, is the fact that they have dropped their last four both SU and ATS on
the road. The Ravens, on the other hand, have been dominant at home this
season. In Baltimore, the Ravens are 6-2 ATS and 7-1 SU. Obviously these numbers
do not concern the majority of the early bettors. The one favorite that the public is backing at this point is the Saints (-5)
as they host the smoldering Eagles. With almost 70% of the early bettors
pounding the Saints, it appears as if they are not concerned with the fact that
the Saints were much better on the road this season. In their last five
games at the Superdome, the Saints were 1-4 SU and ATS. The red hot Eagles
are 6-0 SU and 4-1-1 ATS in their last six games. Obviously with the majority of
the cash on the Saints, bettors feel the Eagles took a huge blow with the loss
of Lito Sheppard as they go against the NFL's top passing offense. Be sure to monitor who the public is backing on the UNIQUE "Betting Trends"
page at
Sportsbook.com. These trends are an excellent way to gauge if and when a
line might move. Once a bettor can distinguish which lines may move, the
bettor will be able to get more value for his bet.
